What is the IASME Governance Certification?

IASME Governance is an Information Assurance standard that aims to be a low-cost, yet effective alternative to ISO 27001.

ISO 27001 is  an international Information Security Standard developed by an International Organization for Standardisation (ISO). The standard outlines physical, legal, technical, and operational controls necessary for managing an Information Security Management Systems (ISMS).

Unfortunately, the cost for an ISO 27001 assessment is very much on the higher side. IASME Governance, therefore, mirrors many of the key controls in ISO 27001. However, the costs for IASME certification is much lower.

IASME Governance Certification demonstrates that businesses have adequate controls in place to prevent data breaches. To comply with IASME Governance, businesses must be able to demonstrate that they can detect potential problems in business processes that can result in accidental data breaches, cyber-attacks, and deliberate attempts to subvert security processes.

To achieve IASME Governance Certification, businesses must be able to show how they will respond to (and recover from) potential data breaches and security incidents.

IASME Governance was also recently updated to reflect new data protection regulations in the EU that fall under the banner of GDPR.

The IASME Governance standard allows the small companies in a supply chain to demonstrate their level of cyber security for a realistic cost and indicates that they are taking good steps to properly protect their customers’ information.

What areas are covered in the IASME Governance Certification?

The IASME Governance certification process includes a Cyber Essentials certification and compliance with the Governance and GDPR requirements. The certification is available either as a self assessment or on-site audit. There are five security controls which organization must implement to be certified:
  1. Firewalls: Network firewalls need to be properly set up to prevent unauthorised access to your internal networks.
  2. Access Control: User accounts should be assigned only to authorised individuals, be managed effectively, and provide the minimum level of access.
  3. Patch Management: Business applications, software and operating systems should be regularly updated to fix known vulnerabilities.
  4. Malware Protection: Anti-malware software should be installed to protect your computers, important data and privacy.
  5. Secure Configuration: Computers and network devices should be configured to minimise vulnerabilities and provide only the services required.
